End Pay Descrimination

The strikes which are taking place nationally today the 04-02-20 is over pay inequality. The strike posed by the TUI is timed impeccably as the vote for government is due to take place Saturday the 08-02-20. I am sure all teachers have heard the various promises from each party. The teachers of Ireland will most definitely take this into consideration when filling out their ballet. It is most likely one of the areas in which sinn fein are picking up many votes and is why they have been doing so well in the opinion polls. Each party’s manifesto has mentioned the following in relation to the pay inequality.

Fianna Fáil says that it is "committed to the establishment of a pathway towards an end to pay inequality as part of our steps towards a new public service pay agreement in 2020".

Fine Gael does not address the issue directly in its manifesto, however in a statement the party said it would "prioritise the resolution of any outstanding pay issues for teachers in the upcoming pay talks". It said it had ringfenced €2 million in its costings for a new public pay deal.

Sinn Féin says it will "fast-track an end of the two-tier pay structures for teachers".

Labour says it will "end the two-tier pay system for teachers".

The Green Party says it will "end pay inequality".

Solidarity-People Before Profit says it will "support teachers in their fight to end pay inequality"

While I am all for equal pay for equal work, I can see the reason why the government made cuts to the public services pay. It was expected that a drop-in pay across the board should have deflated the economy making items cheaper, this has not happened as the living wage in the country continues to climb. the teaching profession could become a less desired profession in the scenario of private shareholder companies being able to offer better benefits to its employees. As a result, there is a problem with recruitment and retention becoming evident as a leader of the TUI Strike has said

"We conducted a survey recently asking whether schools have experienced teacher recruitment difficulties amongst our membership, and almost a hundred percent said they had. Schools have experienced teacher retention difficulties; among the respondents in almost 50% of cases.

And in the past six months, there's been a situation where no teacher has replied to an advertised teaching post in 77% of respondents” Mike Lyons
